Agreed. I have standard-topped guitars that are top-tier because years ago that's all there was. I also have baked-topped guitars that shimmer. When I was looking for a Collings dread last March I was playing all the Collings D's I could get my hands on. I found a D1 that was loud, dry, shimmery... and when I decided to purchase it over any other Collings, the dealer pulled his receipt, to make me a copy as it had several custom changes from standard, that's when I realized that it had a baked top. This guitar is not only a pleasure to play, as you would expect any Collings to be, but it screams. I prefer to play it over my D-28 Authentic 1937 and it is a toss-up with my D-41.
